Shih Yen Chang holds a BA (Hons) and an MA from the University of Otago. She completed her MA thesis in the Department of English and Linguistics titled 'Southern Chinese Kinship Terms' in 2005. This work analyzes the complex kinship address system in Southern Chinese culture, particularly among Taiwanese Southern Min speakers, emphasizing terms used for respect and politeness. It was subsequently published as the book 'Southern Chinese Kinship Terms: The system explained and current address behaviour' by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing in 2010.
Affiliated with the School of Pharmacy at the University of Otago, Shih Yen Chang contributed to research on pharmaceutical care, medication access, and health equity. Her key publications include 'Recruitment and retention of primary care patients into a research study investigating medication adherence' in the Journal of Primary Health Care (2011, co-authored with Simon Horsburgh, Pauline Norris, and Rhiannon Braund), which discusses strategies for engaging patients in adherence studies; 'Community pharmacists' perceptions of services that benefit older people in New Zealand' in the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy (2012, with June Tordoff and Pauline T. Norris), exploring pharmacists' views on elderly support services; 'Poverty, medicines and health care: It's the little things…' in the Journal of Primary Health Care (2015, with Leanne Te Karu), addressing minor barriers in medicine access for the poor; and 'Impact of prescription charges on people living in poverty: a qualitative study' in Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy (2016, with Pauline Norris, June Tordoff, and Leanne Te Karu), examining how charges affect medicine acquisition among low-income groups. These efforts have resulted in 56 citations on ResearchGate. More recently, she assisted with research for a 2023 study on prescription co-payments' effects. Her Academia.edu profile lists interests in memory and materiality, visual research methods, critical social research, and qualitative psychology studies. She also authored the short story collection 'Around The World' in 2022. Currently, Shih Yen Chang is Receptionist - Operations in the Divisional Services & Administration, Academic and Central at the University of Otago, Dunedin, supporting academic operations.
